Bangalore is well on its way to become a cycle-friendly city. One of the important things to enable bicycling is to have a bicycle parking which is safe and secure. Not having a safe parking is a major barrier that could deter people from taking out their bicycles. Ride-A-Cycle Foundation (RAC-F) recently inaugurated a bicycle stand at Lalbagh Southgate, specially dedicated to the cyclists of Bangalore. RAC-F which is committed to popularizing cycling for commuting, leisure and as an agent of social change is also the organizer of the popular Tour Of Nilgiris race.
This initiative was in association with BBMP, which is making available the space for bicycle parking at Lalbagh. There are two stands which can accommodate ten cycles each at both gates of Lalbagh. The stands were built at a cost of Rs 60,000. Bharathi Cement as part of its Green Initiative will be sponsoring the installation of bicycle stands at prime locations in Jayanagar. RAC-F is also active in initiating several projects for the city of Bangalore.
The Madiwala cycle track project, the Jayanagar bicycle-friendly streets project and cycle parking stands at critical centers are couple of other projects which they are currently working on with the Government. S Suresh Kumar, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, who was present at the event, said “Cycling is the best mode of transport as it reduces the consumption of petrol and diesel and also brings down the pollution levels in the city. It’s good to see NGOs and Corporates coming forward to contribute to the society. I want to hold a Cycle Day in the city just as we have a Bus Day.”
